Historical context
Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in a very segregated world where he wasn’t able to play with whoever he wanted. He was told to not be around white people and segregate others. As King grew up he went to Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University to get an education. King graduated at the top of his class at Morehouse College. After college he had been a minister but most importantly a civil rights activist.
King was best known for being a social activist who led the civil rights movement in the U.S. from the mid 1950’s until 1968 when he was then assassinated. King was arrested during a civil rights rally in Birmingham jail which defended his views on racial justice and non-violence.
King was a big part of the NAACP (national association for the advancement of corresponding people). He had a goal to have seismic impact on race relations in the U.S. and he accomplished that goal by speaking at the Lincon Memorial and saying his “I have a dream” speech. This inspired tons of people to not push away people that looked or acted different than they did. About 260,000 people attended this speech and lots of people watched it on their televisions at home live.
Martin Luther King died April 4, 1968 he was assassinated. In March 1969, James Earl Ray was found guilty of Kings Death, later he was found innocent and there was no possible way he could have killed him. James Earl Ray died in jail at the age of 70. Kings family believed the assassination was carried out by a conspiracy involving the U.S. government as alleged by Loyd Jowers in 1963. Marin Luther King is now remembered as one of the most lauded African-American leaders in history
